Considering a first look?

First looks are becoming a popular wedding tradition. Gone are the days where it's superstitious to see each other before the ceremony. If you’re trying to decide what to do, there’s no right or wrong answer. All couples are different. It’s about what works best for you both. If you aren’t sure what to decide, consider these pros and cons.

Pro: Save time by taking most of your photos before the ceremony.

If you’re looking forward to your cocktail hour or something special you have planned after the ceremony, first look photos might be a good choice. There is more time to enjoy everything when you take your photos before the ceremony. Ask your photographer what area they think will be best. You don’t want bad lighting or guests seeing you before the ceremony.

Con: You won’t have your first look at the altar.

A lot of brides dream of the day when they walk down the aisle to their groom. They imagine a loving smile, tears of joy, and awe in their eyes. While you’ll still get a reaction from them, it won’t be as dramatic if you’ve done a first look. Many couples choose to not do a first look for this reason.

If a first look isn’t for you, communicate with your photographer about the portrait timeline. They will make sure you have enough time to capture all the important details.

Pro: A first look could help ease your nerves and calm stress.

Time with your significant other can calm you before the ceremony. It will ease your nerves and give you some quiet, alone time. You may not get that time later on, so take advantage of it!

Con: You’ll have to get ready earlier.

Taking photos before your ceremony means you and your wedding party have to get up early to get ready. You have to eat, get your hair and makeup done, and get dressed before first look photos start. If you’re a night owl, you might need to reconsider or schedule an evening wedding.

Pro: Get those tears out now instead of later.

So many emotions surface on a wedding day. There might be some tears during the ceremony. If you don’t like to cry in front of people, or you just want to get the tears out of the way, a first look might be the choice for you. You’ll also have time to touch up your makeup afterwards.

Are you still unsure of the best decision to make? Here are some alternative options!

  • Do a first touch or first read instead of a first look. You can write letters to each other, pray together, or just hold hands and enjoy your final engaged moments. These can be done around a corner, with a door between you, or with your backs to each other. Just make sure you don’t peek!

  • Do a first look before adding the finishing touches. If you plan on wearing a veil, hair piece, or special accessories, don’t put them on until the ceremony is about to start. This will leave some element of surprise.

Do you have questions about a first look and how that fits into the day? Are you wanting to forgo the first look but you’re nervous about how it will affect your timeline? Let’s set up a time to talk through your concerns.
